Where did my Up-Dog Go?

I haven’t Yoga-d in a week. I tried on Sunday evening and ended up getting the worst case of hiccups and left halfway through (that took a LOT of “allowing myself” to quit). I’ve lost the spark in the last week to go. Usually on Tuesday evenings I am excited to wake up and go to the 6am-er. This morning, the urge to stretch limped lackluster style. My belly hurt, and instead, I biked for 10 miles.

excusefornotexercisingI told myself that I would definitely go tonight, and now as the day unfurls itself headlong into afternoon sleepytime, even after a coffee treat, I hesitate. I just don’t FEEL LIKE IT. And for some reason, that bothers me. What do I do? I feel if I don’t go, it’s BEEN A WEEK!, does that mean I am lazy? Will I lose some up-dog mojo? How come the passion was there (up to 4 times a week!) and now it is just gone?

Am I lazy or do I just need a break?

Instead of yoga last night, I had my tootsies repainted with little flowers because, confession: I suck at painting nails (lack attention to important tiny details, don’t have patience to hold a steady hand). On Monday, I had to (chose to) get in just a few more minutes with that glue gun and rummage through my storage. Today, I am salivating over the thought of a bath, some wine, Boston Legal (season 2) and Trail of Crumbs (want my copy when I am done…comment here!).

Don’t google “beat yourself up over exercise” what you’ll get is little tips on how to motivate your propensity for lazy excuses into sweat pants and heart rate monitor mode. I guess this irritates me….because I don’t feel balanced and I don’t need reminders that I am avoiding something that’s good for me.

I HAVE been working out a bit more lately (I tend to use movement to cope with anxiety and boredom)…elliptical, jogging (not up to running due to PF) and biking, plus I am a walking maven.

Does this mean I need a break? Or a kick in the pants?

  1. Hey, if you aren’t in the mood, you aren’t in the mood! It would be one thing if you just stopped working out completely, but obviously you aren’t into it at the moment so why do it? I’m the same way with pilates. I sometimes go a week without doing it, which used to bother me, but now I’m ok with it because it doesn’t happen often and I know I’ll do it again eventually!

  2. I’m in the same boat as you…and I refuse to think we’re lazy. Sometimes we just need to listen to our bodies and give ourselves a break. Your body will thank you (and hopefully mine will too…)

  3. Listening to your body is so important. But, I think we all have trouble discerning what it is that our bodies are saying sometimes.

  4. Hey there, thanks for stopping by my blog, yours looks great!!

I think we all need a break sometimes, it’s totally okay to give your body the break it’s asking for!! It’s not being lazy, but we’re not machines, we need rest sometimes!! At least you’re thinking about it and taking a proactive attitude!

  5. I totally understand where you are coming from! I’ve been running around 3-4 times a week for the last 7 years and recently felt like I didn’t want to do it anymore! That was so hard to get my head round (was my butt suddenly going to drop to the floor.. followed shortly by my gut??? eeek))but I’ve now managed to embrace it and have cut down to once a week!!! Definitely listen to your body and try something else for a change… you never know it might renew your love of yoga?? Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Not running so much anymore has actually renewed my love for yoga.. especially Bikram yoga! Give yourself a well deserved break OR have you tried yogadownload.com – they have some great 20 minute classes 🙂

  6. Sometimes I feel the exact same way, because I like to hit the gym and aerobic classes at least 4-5 x/week, and sometimes I just don’t feel like it or have the time. Don’t get yourself down for taking a little break. Your body needs a good rest every once in awhile. You’ll get back into it eventually and you’ll feel better and stronger than ever! Refreshed! Thanks for visiting my blog 🙂

  7. I’m a big believer in listening to my body and that’s what I tend to do. If I don’t, I run the risk of overworking it and loosing ground along with motivation.

  8. I can’t run right now, either (or do much cardio besides walking because of my bum knee), and I do get down on myself at times for it. But then I do strength train and am still eating very clean, so I try not to let it get me down.

Everyone has “off” days, and even “off” weeks or months! But if it’s a part of your life, you’ll get back to it. 🙂
